A baby's dedication is a joyous occasion to celebrate. If you are gathering with family, friends and your church community, make or purchase a special cake for your baby to commemorate the occasion.

Cross Cake

All you need is a sheet pan to make a cross shaped cake. If you cut the cake in half, lengthwise, you can leave one long half intact and slice up the remaining half into three equal parts. To assemble it, one part goes above the intact half to lengthen it, and the other two parts on either side for the "arms" of the cross. Frost it and no one will know that it was made of separate pieces. You can decorate your cross cake with an attractive icing border, some roses or write the baby's name on it.

Sleeping Baby Cake

Nothing is sweeter than a sleeping baby. If you are making a round cake with one or more tiers, a sleeping baby figurine placed on top makes an adorable decoration. Drape the sleeping baby with a piece of rolled out fondant cut into a square shape so it looks like a blanket. A lovely touch is a candle or figure in the shape of a cross perched on top so that the baby appears to be sleeping at the base of it. You can further decorate the edges with icing, flowers or well wishes.

Bible Quote Sheet Cake

You don't have to be an expert baker to make a beautiful cake. A sheet cake is an excellent canvas for someone with nice handwriting and a tube of squeezable cake decorating gel. Choose your favourite Bible quote that captures the spirit of the occasion. Words taken directly from scripture will surely touch every guest and convey the importance of the occasion.

Baby Photo Cake

Many bakeries now can use digital technology to make a beautiful cake. Some can scan a photo and print the image with food dye on edible paper. You can have your baby's face centred on the cake itself. Above the photo, write the baby's name. If you prefer to make the cake yourself, you can ask a bakery to make the printed edible image for you. You can put it on top of your frosted cake yourself, or ask them to do it for you. They will charge a fee, but it will be money well spent if you love the effect.
