Advertising dominates all forms of media. Ads for a new car, the latest video game or popular fast-food restaurant influence people every day to spend their money. It's just as important, though, for the advertising industry to promote a healthful lifestyle; there's a variety of advantages for consumers, the fitness industry and the nutrition industry for healthful lifestyle adverts.
Other People Are Reading
The majority of people who consume unhealthy food and drink don't realise how much damage it does to their bodies. The United States Department of Agriculture publishes a "Dietary Guideline for Americans" online, which informs how to make healthy eating choices; however, if you don't search for it, you won't read it. Adults spend an average of four and a half hours watching TV per day, according to Ball State University. Using TV to advertise the USDA's material is an advantage because it reaches a wide audience who are at their most attentive. It's raising awareness of people while they carry on with their day-to-day life.
Influence of Advertising on Children
According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD,) 40 per cent of American children are overweight. Of the 40 per cent, half are obese. If children grow up with bad eating habits, they're more likely to remain overweight for the rest of their lives. Media advertising to children about a healthful lifestyle is an effective way of teaching them the importance of healthful eating and exercise since they view more than 40,000 TV commercials a year. Children are easily influenced to buy unhealthful products by media advertising; therefore, increasing the amount of healthy lifestyle advertisements, like how much fruit and vegetables they should eat and fun exercise activities, can send a positive message.
Reduces the Risk of Diseases and Conditions
It is widely accepted by medical experts that a healthful diet and exercise regime reduces the risk of cancer, as published by the Mayo Clinic. It's also believed eating fruit and vegetables can help reduce the risk of hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and other chronic diseases. Therefore, if advertisers create commercials and other ads raising awareness of these facts, the number of people developing life-threatening conditions will be reduced. If fewer people develop these conditions, less public health money can be spent on treating them. People will also pay less for their health insurance if they remain healthy.
Increase in Revenue for the Fitness and Nutrition Industry
In 2000, consumers spent £71 billion on the fast food industry; it is considered the most profitable industry in the US, and in 2009, was forecasted to make £110 billion by 2010. If consumers were better educated about the pros of healthful eating, they might spend less money on fast food and more money on fitness and proper nutrition. Not only would consumers benefit from living a more healthful lifestyle, but the economy would be helped by the strength of the nutrition and fitness industry.
