How to Decorate a Church Pulpit
Some churches have very large and ornate pulpits. (church inside image by .shock from

The Word of God plays a central role in any Christian congregation, and deserves a special place. This stand, the pulpit, is second only to the altar as a focal point in the church. Early churches decorated their pulpits with ornate carvings or railings, or even raising the pulpit high above the congregation. But today, most churches choose a simpler design. But people are visual creatures. Decorating even a plain or streamlined pulpit turns the simple into the sacred.

  1. 1

Clean the pulpit thoroughly. Gently wipe the entire pulpit, including any carving. Many modern pulpits have a small reading light. If your pulpit is lit, check the light bulb.

  2. 2

Center the flower arrangement in front of the pulpit. Be sure the flowers do not block a walkway.

  3. 3

Fold the end of the ribbon in half lengthwise and make a diagonal cut. Open the ribbon to find a chevron-shaped cut at the end of the ribbon. Tape the ribbon to the top of the pulpit and allow it to drape over the front. If the pulpit is wide, consider using two ribbons.

  4. 4

Tape a penny to the underside of the bottom of the ribbon to keep the ribbon from curling.

Tips and warnings

  • If flowers are too expensive, consider using a potted plant in front of the pulpit.
  • If your faith has an ecclesiastical calendar, consider using the colour ribbon that represents that part of the liturgical year.
  • Always check with the pastor or rector of your church before making changes.
