Costume Ideas for Redheads
Red hair naturally lends itself to many creative costume ideas. (my red hair image by Frenk_Danielle Kaufmann from

With the variety of famous people, both real and fictional, that have red locks, there is no shortage of costume ideas for a natural redhead. Best of all, these looks can be done affordably, with many of the costume elements coming from thrift shops.

Lucille Ball

This television icon was famous for her bright red hair, true red lips and great sense of humour. To showcase your red hair in this costume, set your hair with small hot rollers and let sit. Roll and pin your hair until you have a glorious head of "I Love Lucy" curls. Finish your look with a '50s-style shirtwaist dress, black pumps, red lips and false eyelashes. Follow up with a coat of bright red nail polish.

Jessica Rabbit

Jessica Rabbit is the famous redhead from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," and everything about her character is exaggerated. For this costume, pick up the shiniest red dress you can find and cut a slit up the thigh. Wear a pair of long black or blue gloves and the tallest pair of stiletto heels you can stand. Jessica Rabbit's hair is long and wavy, so set your hair with large hot rollers and arrange it to wave around your face.

Pippi Longstocking

Pippi Longstocking is the beloved character from the classic Astrid Lindgren series of books about a red-headed, eccentric and lovable orphan. For Pippi's costume, braid your hair into two pigtails on either side of your head. Insert a medium piece of wire into each pigtail and arrange each one so they stick straight out. Complete the look with a battered old dress and mismatched striped socks with lace-up boots.

Daphne from "Scooby-Doo"

Daphne from the "Scooby-Doo" series is another classic character that showcases a head of red hair. To get this look, set your hair with large rollers to get a slightly turned-under, preppy look. Place a wide headband in your hair behind your fringe, or with a section of hair in front of the headband if you don't have fringe. Daphne always wears purple and is best known for her purple minidress, which is best paired with a pair of purple heels. Accessorise with Daphne's favourite green-and-pink accent colours.
