Nursery school, or preschool, teachers instruct students who are typically aged three-to-five. They use games, artwork, music, books and computers to introduce youngsters to language skills, creative arts, science and social studies. Education requirements range from a high school diploma to a bachelor's degree, depending on the state. Those with higher degrees are often qualified to teach up to grade three.


Many nursery school teachers instruct part-time. They work the traditional 10-month school year. During their two-month summer vacation, they may teach summer sessions, undergo additional training or manage personal interests. Others work eight weeks and then take a one-week break, as well as a five-week vacation midwinter. The median salary for nursery school teachers is £15,951 annually, with a range of £10,673 to £28,320. The median wage is £7.60 hourly, with a range of £5.10 to £13.6. These figures come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) as of May 2009.


The biggest employers of nursery school teachers are child day care services, with over 70 per cent of the available 389,660 positions. They make nearly the median at £7.60 per hour or £15,951 per year. The employers that pay the highest salaries are elementary and secondary schools, at £12.0 per hour or £25,116 per year.


The state with the highest job opportunities for nursery school teachers is North Carolina, with employment at 4.65 teachers per thousand workers. Job here pay £7.0 per hour or £14,644 per year. The state with the best-paying positions is New Jersey, at £10.50 per hour or £21,950 per year. The concentration of 3.24 teachers per thousand is less than that of North Carolina. (REFERENCE 2)


The city with the most employment for nursery school teachers is Greenville, North Carolina, with 8.10 teachers per thousand workers. Salaries here are below the national and state mean at £6.30 per hour or £13,162. The city with the highest-paying positions is Ocean City, New Jersey, with compensation at £14.40 or £30,043. However, the concentration of 0.82 teachers per thousand workers is almost one-tenth that of Greenville.
