Located on Brazil's north-eastern Atlantic coast, Recife has grown to be one of the country's most beloved tourist attractions. It is a city of colonial houses and stone roads, as well as high-rises and big avenues, and sits between the rivers and Capibaribe and Beberibe.

Gastronomically, Recife is Brazil's north-eastern jewel. Here you'll find alternatives to suit every taste. In Pernambuco, the state Recife is the capital of, you can enjoy the fusion of African, Portuguese and Indian cuisine. Among the most typical types of preparations, there's caldinho, a soup that mixes different flavours and is prepared mostly out of beans, which clearly stands out. As for the "espeto corrido", a dish very typical to Brazil, Porcão, on Av. Eng. Domingos Ferreira 4215, is the place to go, as well as Oficina do Sabor, Rua Amparo 335 in Olinda, serves an assortment of typical dishes. The most traditional restaurant in Recife is Leite, on Pc Joaquim Nabuco 147, founded by the Portuguese chef Manoel Leite da Armando França.

Staying in Recife

As many other cities, Recife's lodging options range from five star hotels to youth hostels. Being so close to the sea, tourists who practice water-sports are a common sight, and tend to look for accommodations that are not necessarily regular hotels. If you plan to stay during World Cup 2014, it is best to book your accommodations very early in advance, because Recife's in season throughout the year, and could well be fully booked by the time you get there.

Where to stay in Recife

The Tulip Inn Recife, at Avenida Boa Viagem 4070, is the most important hotel in the city. It has over 240 rooms and is ideal if you are staying for business, as it is located very close to the business district. Next in line is the Internacional Palace Hotel, Av. Boa Viagem 3722, on a similar level. If you want to be near the beach and enjoy all its splendour, the Golden Tulip Golden Beach, on Av. Boa Viagem 3722, is the ideal choice, followed closely by Recife Praia Hotel, Avenida Boa Viagem 9.
