What qualifications do I need to be a business analyst?

A Business Analyst is responsible for identifying a need for change within an organisation, examining the impact of that change, identifying and documenting the requirements then ensuring delivery. An analyst will also be responsible for helping an organisation through the change process. If you wish to become a Business Analyst, it is helpful to acquire some formal qualifications and training which will increase your chances of successfully moving into this field.

Certification bodies

There are two main bodies that offer certifications for Business Analysts in the UK, mainly through accredited Training Providers.

BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT is a leading industry body for IT professionals. It offers a range of business analysis certification at foundation, practitioner and professional levels.

The International Institute for Business Analysis (IIBA) is an independent non-profit professional association supporting the continuous development of Business analysis.

Foundation certificate

The Chartered Institute for IT offers the Foundation Certificate in Business Analysis which is is a good option for those with limited knowledge or experience of this area. It will help those who might like to gain a high level understanding of the role or are thinking about moving into this field.

The Chartered Institute for IT offers two additional certificates at the foundation level, the Business Change and Commercial awareness certificates.

Diploma in business

The Chartered Institute also offers the Diploma in Business Analysis. This is best suited to new Business Analysts or those who have been performing the role for some time but have never been formally trained.

It is also a good option for those who want to become Business Analysts without first acquiring the foundation certificate.

This Diploma helps an individual demonstrate that they possess the knowledge, skills and capabilities to be an effective Business Analyst.

Continuous development

Once you become a practitioner you can continue your professional development by undertaking some additional training.

The Chartered Institute for IT offers practitioner certificates in Benefits Management and Business Acceptance, Business Analysis Practice, Data Management Essentials, Modelling Business Processes and Requirements Engineering.

The International Institute of Business Analysis offers two certificates, the Certification of Competency in Business Analysis and the Certified Business Analysis Professional.
