Picnicking with family and friends is a perfect opportunity to bond and have some good old fashioned fun. Ball games are a natural choice for post-food picnickers, as well as less-active games like playing cards and board games.

Football variants

If a full scale game of football is not possible because of the available space or the number of picnic attendees, there are many variants of the game you can enjoy. Five-a-side football is the most well-known of these. You only really need a ball as you can use jumpers for goalposts. Senior players sometimes opt to be in goal, as this requires little or no running. Penalty shots is where two players take turns at being goalkeeper and penalty taker. Heading is a fun football activity to play, where a group of players attempt to keep the ball in the air as long as possible using only headers.

Rugby variants

Tag rugby is a non-contact version of full rugby, as recommended by England’s governing body of rugby union, the RFU. It’s a good choice for males and females as teams should consist of both genders. Touch rugby, a similar game, is also popular. Veterans rugby is suitable for older players. If your picnic is at the beach, you could try beach rugby. Although these three variants of rugby are much less aggressive than the real game, you would be well advised to wear a gum shield. Broken teeth are not a good idea at a picnic.

Cricket variants

Despite the popularity of football, cricket is regarded by some as England’s national game. A full scale cricket match might be out of the question but easy cricket, as recommended by The England Cricket Board, is a fun choice for picnics. Older players, if they wish, can bat with an elected runner, whose job it is to do the legwork after a hit. Alternatively, a senior member of the party can choose to field only. Either way, it’s important to try to include people of all ages. Rounders is another fun game similar to cricket suitable for picnics. People tend to use nearby trees as posts and not mind too much if they are not exactly in the usual diamond formation.

Other options

Other fun choices with balls include throw and catch, lawn bowls and croquet. Flying games include flying a kite or model airplane. Throwing a Frisbee is also good fun for all ages. The most popular fun picnic game that needs no equipment is probably hide and seek. Tig-tag (also known as tig), where you touch an opponent and run away and they then have to pursue you, is another fun game needing no equipment. If you would prefer something quiet and less active, sit and make a daisy chain. Card games and board games are also great alternatives.
