While it's important to tailor your CV for each and every job you apply, you'll need to bring your management experience to the fore when applying for leadership roles. If you're looking for both non-management and supervisory positions, firing off the same CV for each type of job will be unlikely to get you very far. Bumping your leadership skills up the running order of your CV could help you bag a management interview.
It's common practice to add a personal statement containing a few sentences about your background, education and work experience at the head of your CV, just below your contact details. This gives recruiters a chance get a bite-sized overview of the information to follow. If you're applying for a leadership role, focus on your experience of working as manager and any professional leadership qualifications you've obtained here. Highlight leadership credentials ahead of other achievements you might otherwise focus on if an ability to influence and manage others is one of the primary functions of the role you've applying for. If you have a management qualification such as an MBA, mention this at the top of your statement.
Junior leadership position
If you've had little or no professional leadership experience, focus on extracurricular activities you've taken part in that involved managing or influencing others in your personal statement and the skills or interests sections of your CV. Mention any voluntary work you've taken part in that involved directing others or any clubs you've headed up. If you've acted as captain or manager of a sports team in your time, describe how you motivated and got the best out of your players or athletes.
When applying for a leadership role, it can be useful to compose a functional CV that lists your key skills above your work experience and education. Compile a breakdown of your leadership skills and experience directly below your personal statement. You can break the list down into separate aspects of leadership such as training, budgeting, project management and mentoring. Use examples from your education and work experience to write a brief sentence or two for each point you mention.
If you're sticking to a chronological CV that lists your work experience in reverse order, use the person specification and job description of the role you're applying for to identify examples from your work experience that demonstrate why you're the right person for the job. If the primary role of the leadership position you're after requires somebody who can train and mentor staff to stick to a strict regulatory requirements, highlight your compliance management experience when describing your previous jobs. If the role you want needs a leader who is going to drive sales, concentrate on how you boosted the revenue and profit generated by teams or departments under your leadership.
