Google likes to boast that its Chrome web browser is fast, safe and easy to use. Millions of internet users clearly agree, if the popularity of the software is anything to go by. This doesn't mean Chrome is infallible though. If your Chrome web browser is repeatedly becoming unresponsive and downloading the latest version of the software hasn't helped, it will be time to get troubleshooting.

Malware and RAM

Any viruses or malware your computer has picked up could cause Chrome to run sluggishly or become unresponsive. Run an anti-virus scan and remove any malware you discover. Low random access memory could also be causing your problems. If this is the root of your woes, it's likely you'll notice poor performance from other software. Close down any programs you have running in the background and consider upgrading your device's RAM.


If the page you're viewing becomes unresponsive and you see a message reading "The following plug-in has crashed...," you'll have two options. You can either sit tight and wait to see if the offending plug-in sorts itself out and restarts automatically, or force it to shutdown. To do the latter, click on the Chrome "Menu" button in the top right-hand side of your screen. Go to "Tools" and then "Task manger," before highlighting the problematic plug-in and clicking on "End process." If your browser is completely unresponsive, use Windows' Task Manager to close it down completely.

User profile

Your browser user profile could be corrupted if you repeatedly get the error message "Whoa! Google Chrome has crashed." To rectify the problem, you'll need to create a new profile folder. Hold down the "Windows" key on your computer and press "E" to open and Explorer window.

Type "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\" into the address bar, locate the "Default" folder in the directory window that opens and rename it as "Backup default." Then try opening an instance of Chrome.

Antivirus and Firewall

Check that your anti-virus and firewall software are up-to-date. Disable your firewall temporarily and see if Chrome opens while it's off. If your browser works fine, take a look at your firewall settings and make sure chrome.exe is allowed. The method for doing so will vary depending on the firewall program you're using, so check your software's user guide if you're unsure how to go about this.
