If you need to plumb a drain for your washing machine, know that the correct terminology for this type of drain is a standpipe. This is a pipe connected to a trap that in turn connects to the main drain of your home. The drain hose form your washing machine goes into the vertical standpipe. As the machine drains, the hose transfers the drain water from the machine to the pipe and down through the main drain of your home.

Locate a nearby drainpipe from a utility sink or other drainage system, and remove a section of pipe wide enough to fit a pipe "T." Cut the pipe with a hacksaw, and then remove the burrs from the cut with sandpaper.
Place the "T" inline with the pipe and then tighten the compression nuts by hand.
Cut a length of PVC drainpipe to match the length needed to reach the area where you plan to install the standpipe. Secure the drainpipe to the "T" by tightening the compression nut on the "T" around the drainpipe.
Place an S-trap on the end of the drainpipe, and tighten the compression nut to lock it in place.
Cut a section of drainpipe that will extend up from the trap to approximately the same height as the back of your washing machine. Secure the pipe to the S-trap with the compression nut.
Place a U-clamp around the pipe, and attach the U-clamp to the wall with screws. This holds the standpipe in place.
Place the flexible drain hose that extends from your washing machine into the standpipe.
Tips and warnings
- If you do not have a drain to tap into, you may have to remove concrete and cut into the actual main drain of the house to install a standpipe. This can become a very tall order to complete. Consulting with a plumber before attempting this type of installation is the best way to ensure you comply with local codes and complete the task in a safe and permanent manner.
