The Ami Pro word processor software is no longer produced and opening old documents stored in Ami Pro formats will cause you some problems if you don't still have the application installed on your computer. Fortunately, you can download and install a small plug-in that allows Microsoft Word to open and edit Ami Pro SAM documents. You can then save these documents in a more modern format.

Open a Web browser and navigate to the "gmayor.com" website. Click on the "Downloadable Files" link on the right side of the top toolbar. Scroll halfway down the next page and click on the "AmiPro Converter for Word" link to download the file.
Double-click the downloaded file to open it and then double-click the folder that corresponds to your version of Windows. If you have a 64-bit version of Windows 7, open that directory; for any other Windows version, open the "Windows 32-bit" directory.
Double-click the EXE file in the folder you opened and follow the on-screen instructions to install the converter.
Launch Microsoft Word as you normally would and use its "Open" feature to navigate to the SAM document you want to open. If the document doesn't appear in the folder listing, open the "File type" drop-down menu and set it to "All Files." Double-click the SAM document to open it in Word.
Use Word's "Save As" command to save the document under some other name. Choose a different file format from the "File type" drop-down menu: DOC, RTF and TXT formats all can be readily opened in present-day software applications.
