A tablecloth gives a more finished look to the patio table for an outdoor gathering. An umbrella patio table has a hole in the centre of it so a regular tablecloth will not work very well for a covering. A linen, vinyl or cotton tablecloth adds a neat, easy clean covering to the umbrella table. You can make a do-it-yourself tablecloth that will go around your patio table umbrella. The cloth will lie flat on the table with a closure for ease of removal.

  1. 1

Measure the table to determine the width, length and drop needed for the tablecloth. Measure the drop from the top of the table and down the side to the desired length plus 1-inch for the hem. If you plan to make a zippered closure, measure the tabletop from the outside of the umbrella pole to the outer edge of the table. Add the drop measurement to the length of the zipper.

  2. 2

Cut the fabric into a circular, square, oblong or rectangular shape to match the measurements, with cloth or pinking shears.

  3. 3

Trace and cut out a circular shape from cardboard to match the circumference of the umbrella hole in the table. Trace the circle in the centre of the tablecloth fabric.

  4. 4

Cut a straight line from the edge of the cloth to the circular shape at the fabric centre. Cut out the circular opening.

  5. 5

Fold back the edge of the cloth about 1/4-inch around the circle and the straight cut and pin it in place. with straight pins. Fold the 1-inch hem of the entire tablecloth and secure it with pins. If you are installing a zipper, pin it in place. Sew the zipper in with matching thread.

  6. 6

Heat the iron and glide it along the folded cloth starting with the circular umbrella opening. Immediately place the hem tape on the warm cloth and iron it in place.

  7. 7

Sew hook and loop tape or buttonholes and buttons in place for a secure tablecloth closure.
