For centuries man has used rabbit pelts to create warm and plush hats that stand up against the cold and keep a person's head warm. For example, the Russian's iconic "ushanka" headpiece is often created from rabbit furs. You can create your own style of hat at home using just a few rabbit pelts. By designing your own pattern made to custom-fit your head, you'll create a one-of-a-kind accessory that's not only functional but eye-catching as well.

- Measuring tape
- Two or three rabbit pelts

Take measurements of the person who will be wearing the rabbit pelt hat. This must include the circumference of his head, as well as the distance from the bottom of the ears to the top of the head.
Use the measurements to create a pattern for the hat. On a piece of sturdy paper, draw a rectangle that's as long as the circumference of the head and as high as the ear-to-top measurement. Add 1/4 inch all around for seam allowance. Cut out the rectangle and fold it together in the shape of the hat. Measure the circumference of the folded rectangle's circular opening. Use that measurement -- plus an added 1/4 inch seam allowance -- to create a circular pattern design, which will be the top of the hat. Cut out this shape for the pattern.
Trace the rectangular and circular patterns onto the back of your rabbit pelts. Cut out the shapes in the pelts with a sharp knife.
Cut the circular-shaped rabbit pelt into four pieces, first cutting vertically across the centre of the circle, then horizontally. Pin the bottom of these pieces around the top of the rectangular shape, with all the fur on the same side.
Pin the rectangular piece of pelt material together, with the fur side facing the centre. Using a thick needle and strong thread, sew the pelt together along the pinned seam. Use a whip stitch as you move, making the stitches about 1/8 inch apart and 1/8 inch deep.
Pin the triangle shapes of the cut circular piece back together on top of the hat. The hat should now be closed on top. Sew each of these pieces along the pinned seams.
Remove all pins. Flip the sewn pelt right-side out to complete your hat.
Tips and warnings
- When tracing the patterns on the rabbit fur, you might need to lay two pelts side-by-side to be long enough for the rectangle shape. Sew these pieces together before continuing on with the rest of the craft.
- When cutting through rabbit pelts, be careful to snip through only the leather and not the fur.
