ArcMap is a geographic information system software program included with ArcGIS, a suite of programs that allows cartographers and mapping experts to create maps for a wide variety of applications. ArcMap can handle and display external files inside of it, such as image files in the JPG and PNG formats.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Open ArcMap and then open the mapping file that you want to import the JPG or PNG file into.

  2. 2

Click "ArcToolBox" in the file menu.

  3. 3

Click "Import" and then select the "Image" option.

  4. 4

Select the image, choose the import dimensions you want to use and then click "Import."

Tips and warnings

  • Ensure that you don't move or delete the PNG file, as ArcMap still links to its location even after you import it.
