How to Import a PNG File to ArcMap

ArcMap is a geographic information system software program included with ArcGIS, a suite of programs that allows cartographers and mapping experts to create maps for a wide variety of applications. ArcMap can handle and display external files inside of it, such as image files in the JPG and PNG formats.

    Open ArcMap and then open the mapping file that you want to import the JPG or PNG file into.

    Click "ArcToolBox" in the file menu.

    Click "Import" and then select the "Image" option.

    Select the image, choose the import dimensions you want to use and then click "Import."

Tips and warnings

  • Ensure that you don't move or delete the PNG file, as ArcMap still links to its location even after you import it.
