The IMG file format is a virtual replication of a CD, DVD or Blu-ray Disc. This "image" of a disc can be loaded or mounted by a virtual drive, software which acts as if you are putting a physical disc into your computer. There are many free disc drive emulators, such as Virtual Clone Drive, Daemon Tools Lite and Alcohol 52%. Each program can allow you to open an IMG file.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Open Alcohol 52%. Click "Virtual Drive." Choose the "Number of Virtual Drives" drop-down menu and select at least one drive. Click "OK." Select "File" then "Open." Navigate to the .IMG file and then select "Open."

  2. 2

Open Virtual Clone Drive. Select at least one drive. Click "OK." Open your system tray and right click on Virtual Clone Drive. Click "Mount" under the virtual drive listed. Navigate to the .IMG file and select it. Select "Open."

  3. 3

Open Daemon Tools Lite. Click "Add Device," then right-click on the virtual drive at the bottom of the program, and select "Mount." Navigate to the .IMG file, select it and click "Open."

  4. 4

Click "Start," then "Computer" and then double-click the virtual drive to open or run the image file if it did not auto-run after being mounted.
