Sony camcorders contain a video camera and a video recorder in one unit. It's possible for you to use your Sony digital camcorder as a webcam because you don't actually have to record anything -- just plug the camera in to your computer, install the required software and you're ready to go. Many different Sony camcorders exist but the basic instructions for using any of these models as a webcam are generally the same.

- Sony USB Streaming Driver

Open a Web browser and navigate to Sony's support website. Download a copy of the Sony USB Streaming Driver.
Find the SONYHB2.EXE file on your computer and double-click it to begin the installation process. To locate the file, check the bottom downloads bar on your browser. Alternatively, open Windows Explorer and search for the file. Press the "Windows" and "E" keys together, type "SONYHB2" into the search box and press "Enter."
Download and Install the Driver
Connect the Sony digital camcorder to your computer using the USB cable.
Remove any tape from inside the Sony camcorder and then set the "Camera/Playback" switch to "Camera."
Press the "Menu" button. Press "Settings" and then "Camera." Press the "USB Streaming" option to turn streaming on. Wait a couple of minutes to allow your computer to recognise the camera.
Start your webcam software or instant messaging software. The software should recognise the Sony camcorder as a webcam.
