How to Record TV With Ubuntu

Recording TV shows to watch at a later time is much more convenient than trying to schedule everything else around them. Some manufacturers have put electronics onto the market for the express purpose of recording TV, but if you already have a computer running Ubuntu, just add a few small pieces of hardware in order to be able to record TV right onto your computer and watch it at your leisure.

    Record TV shows using Me TV. It requires a TV tuner card plugged into cable or a digital antenna. Schedule recordings, as well as repeated recordings, or push the "Record" button on the viewer window while you are watching a show. It is available for download in the official Ubuntu repositories.

    Watch and record Web TV shows using FreetuxTV. It is not available in the official repositories, but you can add its own repository. Freetux TV allows you to watch mostly Web TV, but does not require any additional hardware. Click on the channel you want to watch and push the "Record" button. It does not allow you to schedule recordings in advance.

    Install MythTV to record your digital TV shows. MythTV requires a TV tuner in your computer, connected to cable or a digital antenna. You can also watch, pause, fast forward and rewind live TV shows, in addition to recording shows. This package is available through the official Ubuntu software repositories.

    Schedule recordings using the TV Guide function in Freevo. Click on the "Record" button corresponding to the TV show you want to record. You can also record shows manually while you are watching them. Freevo requires a TV tuner card connected to cable or digital antenna. It is available through Ubuntu's official repositories.
