Daft Punk, an electronic music duo made up of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, has used many different helmets during the years. From the late 1990s to the early 2000s, Daft Punk went from wearing simple masks to complex robot helmets that many have tried to replicate. It is said that some of the more complex helmets cost upwards of £42,250 to produce, and can take months to create. The following steps offer a simpler, more affordable option for making an "encore" helmet, as worn during the "Human After All" era from 2005-2010.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Red standard rave-issue glow sticks (short and long, purchased in tubes of 50 each)
  • Flat, black plastic connectors
  • Krazy Glue
  • Black motorcycle helmet

  1. 1

Draw, on paper, the design you would like to make on your helmet with the glow-sticks. Identify points where the sticks would need to be reinforced, such as curves. These points will guide you when you later glue on the connectors to the helmet.

  2. 2

Clean the black motorcycle helmet to ensure that you are beginning with a clean surface.

  3. 3

Glue the connectors on areas of the helmet you previously indicated in your drawing. Start with only a few, adding more as needed once sticks have been snapped into place.

  4. 4

Snap glow-sticks into the connectors once the glue has dried, usually about a half an hour. The precise amount of time drying takes will be indicated on the glue instructions.

  5. 5

Observe the overall effect, and add more connectors and glow-sticks as need be. Replace glow sticks as they start to dull, usually after about seven hours or so.

Tips and warnings

  • Use a photo of the "encore" version helmet, many of which are available online, as a reference for your design.
  • You can frequently find inexpensive black motorcycle helmets online or in thrift shops.
  • Complete the Daft Punk outfit by using any extra glow-sticks you have on gloves or a leather jacket.
