How to Make Fake Brains

Updated April 17, 2017

If you are throwing a Halloween party or setting up a haunted house, you can create creepy fake brains for an eerie and authentic touch. Though they are messy to create, fake brains will give your guests a fright to remember. While you may have made spaghetti guts and peeled-grape eyeballs in the past, raise the bar this Halloween and display realistic fake brains in unlikely places.

Bunch together plastic grocery bags to form an oval for the base of the brain. Start with a wad of three bags, tape it tightly together with masking tape then add more, taping as you go. Add plastic bags and tape until you have a brain shape that is about as large as two fists. The finished product will be mostly made up of bags but be careful that the bags are securely taped together so the brain does not fall apart later on.

Cover your work area with newspaper. Fill a container with approximately a cup of white glue. Use a paintbrush to add red and flesh-coloured paint to the container of glue. Tempera paint will work well for this project and it is inexpensive. Stir the mixture adding as much or as little paint as you need to achieve a bloody flesh colour.

Cover your brain-base with an even, medium to thick layer of the glue mixture. Do not allow the glue to dry before completing the next steps.

Take the crust off of a slice of bread and squeeze the bread into a tight cylinder about 3/4 of an inch wide and 6 inches long.

Curl the bread into a spiral shape and place it on the glue-covered base. Cover the bread with the glue mixture. Make another bread-cylinder, place it on the brain-base in a spiral shape and cover it with the glue mixture. Continue to make bread cylinders and place them in a spiral-like interlocking pattern all over the top of the base. If it helps, look at a picture of an actual brain to help you get a feel for the lay out of the bread.

Allow the top of the brain to dry before flipping it over. It may take around 12 hours to dry, but it needs to dry enough so that the completed part does not fall off when you cover the rest. The bread will be squishy even once the glue has dried but the glue and paint mixture should not rub off on your hands. Finish the brain with the bread cylinders and glue and allow it to dry for another 12 hours before use.

Pour a few tablespoons of fake blood all over the brain right before your party or haunted house.

Keep your brain in the refrigerator if you need to store if before use. The brain should last at least five days if refrigerated. Make a package of red Jell-O according to the directions on the package. Once the Jell-O has set, break it into messy chunks and scatter them around your fake brain to make it look more gory.
