IMVU meshing allows you to make products that other users can develop into various styles and colours. Meshes are the basis for many IMVU products such as avatars, clothing, furniture and even actions. Meshing is done through a quality 3D program such as 3D Studio Max or Photoshop, allowing you to piece together shapes and transform edges into a unique design. Once your mesh is created, you can add textures and other details to give it a one-of-a-kind look.

Instructions

  1. 1

Download IMVU's female or male weighting files from the IMVU website. These files contain an IMVU avatar for you to use when conforming clothing and hair to fit the standard avatar shape. These files are not required when you are meshing furniture.

  2. 2

Open your chosen 3D program. Programs that work well with IMVU meshing include Photoshop and 3D Studio Max. From the program's File menu select "Open." Choose the IMVU weighting file for clothing and click "Open" on the pop-up window. If you are creating furniture, skip the file menu option for opening.

  3. 3

Select the "Create" or "New Project" tab on your program. This will open a toolbox for choosing colours, textures and shapes. This is where your imagination comes into play. Choose shapes for your mesh and manipulate them to change the edges or total shape by clicking-and-dragging the edges of each polygon. For clothing, use your avatar template to determine the shape of your neckline, length of your skirt or any other shape details you want in the same manner.

  4. 4

Select "Modifiers" from your toolbox. This will open up a list of effects you are able to use to smooth your edges and add more detail. Experiment with the different modifiers to find the effect that you want by simply clicking the modifier name and choosing "Add."

  5. 5

Add materials to your mesh by selecting the "Materials" tab on your toolbox. Materials are a series of 2D images that are listed in JPG or PNG formats. You can import your own from your desktop or use the preloaded materials in your 3D program. Choose the polygons where your material is to be placed and then, from your toolbox, choose your material and click "Add."

  6. 6

Select "UVW Map" and choose the way you want your material added to your mesh. You will be given a list of options. Experiment with your options to find the shape that fits your mesh best. Select different polygons and select "Unwrap UVW" to allow certain parts of your material on different areas of your mesh. Move your selection tool by dragging the frame to the area you want displayed.

Tips and warnings

  • Before exporting your mesh to IMVU, you must weight it to the product skeleton. IMVU tutorials have clear directions on weighting your products effectively.
