The Nikon Electronic Format RAW image file, or NEF, is an uncompressed format used by Nikon digital cameras. You may need to convert these files to a more common format, such as JPG, to view them. When dealing with a large number of NEF files, you can simplify the conversion process by using a batch converter. Several free programs are available to read NEF files and convert them to JPG files all at once.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Nikon provides a free program called Nikon View NX2 to view and batch convert NEF files. After downloading and installing the program, use the "Convert Files" functionality to select your NEF files and batch convert them to JPG or another image format.

  2. 2

XnView is a batch image viewer and converter provided free for individual users. With XnView, you can open the folder containing your NEF files and process them all at once to the image format of your choosing.

  3. 3

Adobe Photoshop comes with a built-in batch image processor. Click "File," select "Scripts" and pick "Image Processor" from the list. Select the folder containing your NEF images and select "Save as JPEG."
