Kids love science experiments that create fake explosions, and conducting this type of experiment is cheap and easy to set up. This experiment is perfect for a science class at school, an activity at day camp or just something to try out in the backyard. It is best for children over the age of 8. Things you need
- 2-liter bottle of soda
- Pack of Mentos candies
- Level outdoor surface
- Garden hose (optional)
Set up your experiment station in a large open space that has a level surface. It is best to do this experiment outdoors.
Place the soda bottle on the ground. Open the cap and set it aside.
Warn all participants and spectators that they should step back at least 10 feet.
Unwrap the entire roll of Mentos candies. Drop the entire roll into the open soda bottle at once.
Move out of the way and watch your fake explosion happen.
Use a garden hose to clean up the area covered by the soda, if you would like. Otherwise, the area will become sticky as the soda dries.
