This experiment is perfect for a science class at school, an activity at day camp or just something to try out in the backyard. It is best for children over the age of 8. With just a few supplies that you probably already have lying around already, you can easily create a fake explosion with this experiment.

  1. 1

Set up your experiment station in a large open space that has a level surface. It is best to do this experiment outdoors.

  2. 2

Place the soda bottle on the ground. Open the cap and set it aside.

  3. 3

Warn all participants and spectators that they should step back at least 10 feet.

  4. 4

Unwrap the entire roll of Mentos candies. Drop the entire roll into the open soda bottle at once.

  5. 5

Move out of the way and watch your fake explosion happen.

  6. 6

Use a garden hose to clean up the area covered by the soda, if you would like. Otherwise, the area will become sticky as the soda dries.
