When purchasing fresh produce such as carrots and celery or harvesting them from your garden, you will want to store them in the refrigerator to maximise their freshness and make sure these vegetables last as long as possible. Carrots and celery can be eaten alone as an appetizer or used in salad and recipes. There are several methods for storing carrots and celery in your refrigerator to extend the life of these veggies.
Rinse celery under cold tap water and wrap loosely in a paper towel. Place in the crisper drawer in the refrigerator, which is meant to keep humidity in and keep your vegetables from drying out.
Peel your carrots and place them in a shallow plastic container with 1/2 inch of cool water. You may also cut your carrots in half before placing them in the container. Place a lid on the container and store on the shelf in your refrigerator.
Store celery by wrapping loosely in cling film after rinsing it in cool water, and place it in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator. You may also store your celery by standing it up, stalks on top, in a pitcher of cool tap water and place it in the refrigerator.
Purchase mini carrot sticks and place the purchased bag directly in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator, or you may remove carrots from the bag and place in cool water in a plastic container.
Harvest carrots and celery from your garden and bring them in the house and clean off dirt. Rinse the produce under cool water. Chop celery, and peel and chop carrots. You may store both in cool tap water in a plastic container and place on the shelf in your refrigerator. They will keep for several days.
Try to eat produce within one week of purchasing it. Produce maintains more flavour the closer to purchase that you consume it.
If your carrots or celery become slimy or discoloured they have lost their freshness and are going bad. Discard produce that has gone bad.
