You can install a push button door handle on an interior door and latch plate on the jamb as a simple do-it-yourself project. The most difficult part of the task is drilling the holes. Door handles come with paper templates that will help you line up the holes for the door knob and latch. Take your time drilling the holes in your door and the parts will all fit together with ease. Select a door knob that will complement the existing door hardware in your home.

- 7/8-inch spade bit
- 2 1/8-inch hole saw
- 1-inch chisel
Align the paper template that was included with the push button door knob over the operating side of the door at the height desired for the door knob. Mark the centre points for the holes onto the door with a pencil.
Drill a 7/8-inch diameter hole in the door at the centre mark for the latch hole using a drill and 7/8-inch drill bit. Make the hole just deeper than the length of the internal part of the latch.
Center the 2 1/8-inch hole saw bit on the centre point for the door knob hole on the door. Drill through the door until the centre pilot part of the hole saw punches through the door. Back the hole saw out and finish cutting the hole out of the door on the opposite side. This technique will ensure that the wood does not splinter when you cut the hole out.
Slide the latch into the latch hole in the door. Align it so it is upright in the hole. Trace around the latch where it rests against the door with a pencil. Pull out the latch. Chisel out the area inside the pencil outline with a 1-inch chisel to a depth where the area of the latch that rests against the door will rest flush with the surface of the door.
Insert the latch into the latch hole in the door. Drive the screws that were included with the door knob through the mounting holes in the latch into the door with a screwdriver.
Align the two halves of the door knob on either side of the door. Make sure that the push button half of the knob will be on the inside of the room when the door is closed. Push the door knob halves together through the holes. Drive the two screws included with the knob into the holes in the door knob with a screwdriver to tighten the knob together.
Close the door and mark where the latch is located on the door jamb using a pencil. Hold the latch plate over the pencil marks for the latch. Drive the screws included with the door knob through the mounting holes in the latch plate into the door jamb with a screwdriver.
