Evernote can a valuable tool for a graduate student in a Ph.D. program; it helps to keep the many documents and notes needed for research and classwork organised. A student who use a program like Evernote will be able maintain her data in one place. Evernote is a cloud-based service that synchronises accounts across computers and portable devices. It can hold documents, notes and pictures for future access from any computer.

    Take notes when reading books, articles, news or after a conversation. If you are away from the computer, write the notes in a journal then type them into Evernote. Alternatively, you can use Evernote's hand-recognition software to scan your notes, convert them into text and upload to your account. This way you can collect and store your thoughts in one place.

    Save documents such as articles, news clippings, important websites and online content. You can save Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF documents in Evernote.

    Record photos in Evernote. If a complicated chart is drawn on a whiteboard or other type of display, take a photo of it and save it in Evernote.

    Dictate your thoughts, ideas or conversations if you have a smart mobile device. Evernote has apps for the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry and Palm Pre/Palm Pixi that allow you to record and upload to your account. This is great for academics who do not have a notebook with them at all times or are especially scatterbrained.

    Tag your notes and uploads. This may be one of the most important resources Evernote has. Tagging allows the Ph.D. student to hold a large amount in data in one spot and yet keep them easily categorised and separate. For example, you can create tags for "news articles," "academic articles" and "notes."
