A two-way ANOVA is a statistical test used to assess the relationship between one continuous variable and two nominal variables. The ANOVA is run to assess whether the levels of the continuous variable differs for different groups of the nominal variables. Step-by-step instructions are provided for how to run a two-way ANOVA in Minitab 16 using an example of a study designed to assess the effects of the nominal variables gender and sleep hygiene on the continuous variable test scores.

The worksheet is in standard spreadsheet format with numbered rows running along the left vertical edge and Letter/number combinations beginning with C1 running horizontally along the top of the worksheet. Your first column name Test Score would be entered into the column heading C1 with data on 12 subjects as follows:

  2. 2

Left click on the "Stat" option from the main menu. A sub-menu will appear.

  3. 3

Highlight the word "ANOVA" with the mouse. A sub-menu will appear to the right.

  4. 4

Left-click on the "Two Way" option and another sub-menu will appear.

  5. 5

Double-click on the words "C1 Test Score" in the large, white options box. This will be the only option in the box because Minitab knows that this is the only continuous variable in your data set. Double-clicking on the words "C1 Test Score" will insert this variable into the "Response" box.

  6. 6

Double-click on the words "C2" Gender to put the variable gender into the "Row Factor" box.

  7. 7

Double-click on the words "C3 Sleep Hygiene" to put the variable sleep hygiene into the "Column Factor" box.

  8. 8

Click on the option "OK" and Minitab will generate the two-way ANOVA in the session window.
