An ".mst" file is a transform file used by certain Microsoft installer files. The transform file is often used by developers to employ different settings and parameters when testing software versions. You can use the transform file that was provided by a developer to install a program with certain settings or even use multiple MST files to test multiple settings. You can also use the MST File Viewer to view the contents of any MST file as a plain text document.
- Skill level:
Click the Office XP Resource Kit link in the Resources section and download and install the "Office Resource Kit Tools." This package includes the MST File Viewer.
Click the "Start" button and go to "Programs," then "Microsoft Office Tools" and then "Microsoft Office XP Resource Kit Tools" and click "MST File Viewer."
Choose the MSI file and MST file you would like to view and click "View Transform." This will create and display a text file of the settings modified by the MST file.
Viewing an MST File
Click the "Start" button and click "Computer." Navigate to the location of the folder that contains the MSI and MST file you would like to use but do not open the folder.
Hold the "Shift" key and right-click the folder that contains the two files and click "Open Command Window Here." This will open a command line window with the proper folder already opened.
Type "msiexec" (without the quotes) followed by a space, then type the name of the MSI file with its ".msi" extension and follow it with a space.
Type "TRANSFORMS=" in capital letters without the quotes, followed by the name of the MST file and its ".mst" extension, and then press enter. This will start the MSI file using the MST file for the modified settings. Repeat the process with any other MST files you would like to test.
