KompoZer is an open-source Visual HTML editor that is used to edit and design websites. KompoZer features a GUI (graphic user interface) so elements of your design can be moved around and inserted visually without having to use HTML code. KompoZer also allows you to use templates created by other users. These templates can be download as a .zip file, then uploaded and used by KompoZer in just a few steps.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Locate your downloaded KompoZer template using "My Computer" on Windows or the Finder window on a Mac. This will be a file ending in .zip.

  2. 2

Double-click the file to automatically extract the contents to the directory in which the .zip file is located. You also can right-click on the file and select "Extract All" and designate where you want the files to be unzipped. This will give you one or several HTML pages as well as any images associated with the template.

  3. 3

Open KompoZer. From the top menu select "File," then "New," then "A New Document Based on a Template." Navigate to the folder where you saved the HTML files and choose one. You most likely will want to begin with "index.html." This will be your home page.

  4. 4

Make your desired changes to the template using KompoZer's tools. You can add new text, insert images or change the colours and design of the page. When you are finished, click "File," then "Save" to save your file.

Tips and warnings

  • A template is a foundation; you should change it to make it unique and your own.
