Nike Mercurial Vapor IV FG soccer cleats are one style of cleat in the Vapor line. The most distinctive trait for many Vapor cleats is the lace guard which covers a significant portion of the laces on the cleats, providing a smoother surface on the top of the foot for more accurate ball striking. As the lace guard is very tight to the top of the cleat, however, the guard can make it difficult to change the laces in the cleats.

  1. 1

Reach under the lace guard with your hand palm up and press up on the underside of the lace guard to stretch out the guard slightly and make accessing the eyelets easier.

  2. 2

Grip the end of one the plastic tips of the lace between your thumb and index fingers on your left hand, then place your middle finger against the underside of the top eyelet on the right.

  3. 3

Position your hand so that the middle segment of your index finger is pointing toward the toe of the shoe, and is elevated up so it is higher than the end of the plastic tip. This will allow your finger to push the guard up so that you can access the eyelets more easily.

  4. 4

Slide your hand under the guard until you reach the lowest right eyelet and use your middle finger to locate the hole, then guide the tip through with your thumb and index fingers. Reach your thumb into the shoe and grip the tip between your thumb and middle fingers and pull the lace tip all the way out of the shoe.

  5. 5

Repeat with the second tip on the left side of the eyelet, using your right hand to thread the lace. Pull the lace so the ends are even.

  6. 6

Grab the loose end on the left with your left hand and guide it into the next available hole on the right, then grab the other loose end in your right hand and guide it through the next available eyelet on the left.

  7. 7

Repeat the lacing until your laces reach the top of your shoe. Each row of eyelets will be easier to access than the row before it, as you get farther and farther from the bottom of the guard and closer to the exposed eyelets at the top.
