Whether you're recording an interview, a music demo or a simple voice reminder, you may want better sound quality than the iPhone's internal microphone can provide. To improve the quality of your recordings you can purchase an external microphone, which plugs into the iPhone's headphone jack. Some microphones require adaptors; others plug into the jack directly. These microphones can generally be used with any recording applications, including the iPhone's standard Voice Memo app.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Purchase an external microphone that is specifically designed for Apple products, such as the IK Multimedia iRig Mic, the Brando Flexible Mini Capsule Microphone or the Monster iSoni Talk. If you choose to purchase a microphone that requires an adaptor, be sure to purchase one of these as well.

  2. 2

Plug the microphone into the headphone jack of the iPhone. If you are using an adaptor set-up, plug the microphone into the appropriate end of the adaptor; then plug the other end of the adaptor into the headphone jack.

  3. 3

Open your recording app of choice, such as Voice Memo, iProRecorder, Fire or FourTrack.

  4. 4

Use the app as usual. Generally, this requires tapping a button with a red dot to record. Some apps require you to create a new file. If you are using a music recording app, you may have more options to calibrate before you record.
