How to customise the Astronaut Theme

Updated February 21, 2017

The "Astronaut" theme is a blog template created for the Tumblr blogging platform by Peter Vidani. It is a grid-based theme that allows readers to view several articles in your Tumblr blog at the same time. There are a variety of options you can customise in the Astronaut theme, such as the blog title, description, link and text colours. You can also add custom CSS to the theme. If you want to customise the Astronaut theme, open the Tumblr customisation interface.

Open your default Web browser and navigate to the "Tumblr" website.

Type your e-mail address and password in the provided text fields, then click "Log in."

Click your blog name, located next to "Dashboard" at the top of the Tumblr Dashboard.

Click the "Customise appearance" link on the right side of the page.

Click the "Themes" menu and scroll down to the "Free Themes" section. Click to select "Astronaut" to install the Astronaut theme. Click "Themes" to close the menu.

Click the "Info" menu. Type a title and blog description in the displayed "Title" and "Description" text fields, then click the "Info" menu to confirm the change and close the menu.

Click the "Appearance" menu. Click to select a colour swatch next to the text that describes the theme element you want to change to a new colour, then click to select a colour from the colour slider and brightness chart. For example, click the "Title" swatch, then click the colour green on the colour slider. Click in the brightness chart to select a shade of green. Click the "X" in the top right corner of the colour choosing window to close it.

Click to select a font from the drop-down "Body font" menu.

Click the "Upload" button next to "Header image," then click to select an image from your computer. Click "Open" to upload an image to replace the blog title.

Click to place or clear a check from the "Show portrait bubble" and "Show notes on permalink page" to enable or disable these options. Click the "Appearance" menu to close it.

Click the "Advanced" menu.

Type any custom CSS that you want to add to the Astronaut theme in the "Add custom CSS" text area. You can use custom CSS to create or edit hover effects, background images and other theme elements.

Click to select the number of posts you want to show on the front page of your Tumblr blog from the "Post count" drop-down menu.

Click to enable or disable the "Enable high-res photos," "Open links in new window," "Use optimised layout on mobile devices," "Use descriptive URLs" or "Promote Tumblr!" options.

Click the "Advanced" menu to close it.

Click the "Save" or "Save and Close" button in the top right corner of the customisation interface to save the changes.
