Instructions

  1. 1

Mark with a pencil where you will cut the paper for the origami strip. If you are making smaller stars, use the 8½-inch side of the paper and cut a strip about ½ inch wide. If you want larger stars, use the 11-inch side and cut a strip about 1¼ inches wide.

Fold 2 to 3 inches at one end of the paper underneath at a tight angle. Wrap this piece over toward the folded point, making a hexagon.

Fold any extra tail under so all sides are even.

Fold the long piece over the hexagon and continue to wrap and fold it tightly until the entire paper is making up the hexagon. Tuck the last bit of paper underneath the previous layer so nothing sticks out. A dab of glue under this piece will make the star extra strong.

Press your thumbnail into one side of the hexagon at a time, denting each side until it becomes a 3-dimensional star. If the hexagon has not been made tightly enough or with strong enough paper, it will buckle and crumple instead of popping into the desired star shape.

Puncture one point of the star with the sewing needle to create an opening for the paper clip. Unbend the large end of the paper clip slightly and straighten out the wire from end to end, leaving the ends bent.

Poke the smaller end of the paper clip through the star. The large end will be the hook for the ornament.

Tips and warnings

  • Regular printer paper works fine for smaller stars, but stronger paper, such as vellum, works best.
