How to Make Gemstones in 3ds Max

Updated April 17, 2017

3ds Max is a CAD modelling and rendering application used to create single images or animation. The three-dimensional (3-D) models created in 3ds Max can be exported for use in other programs or to sell online. When creating models for sale, it is important to create items that might be in demand. One item you might create and sell would be 3-D models of gemstones. This sort of basic model is easily done in 3ds Max.

Start the 3ds Max application by clicking on the desktop shortcut.

Go to the "Objects" panel on the right and choose "Standard Primitives." From the options, choose the "Geosphere." In the "Perspective" view port, use the mouse to draw the shape onto the grid.

Use the "Scale" function to flatten the shape so that is the shape of a gem.

Use the "Materials" panel to apply a translucent material to the gem.

Select "File" from the menu and choose "Save." In the dialogue, name the file and click "Save."
