How to Reset a Password With ERD Commander

If you have forgotten one of your passwords on your computer, you can use the Windows Emergency Repair Disc (ERD) Commander to reset the password. Windows ERD Commander only works with Windows XP and Windows Vista so you cannot use it with Windows 7. ERD Commander is a boot disc that allows you to log in, bypassing any user accounts. At this stage you can reset the password to whatever you like.

    Insert the Windows ERD Commander disc into your computer and restart it. When prompted, follow the on-screen instructions and press "any key to boot from CD."

    Choose your operating system, set the "Keyboard" and "Time zone," then click "OK."

    Click "Start," then "System Tools" and then "Locksmith." Click "Next."

  4. 4

    Choose the user you need to reset the password for and click "Next." Change the password and click "Finish." Click "Start," then "Log Off," then "Restart."
