A NEF file is a Nikon raw image file. NEF is an acronym for Nikon Electronic Format, and this file type may be referred to as a digital negative. A NEF file contains more information than standard image files, such as JPG or GIF. NEF files may be converted into other image file types by using a file conversion tool. However, Nikon provides a free tool for viewing and working with NEF files.
