How to Fix a Loose Snap Button
Snap fasteners have been used since the 1800s. (Brand X Pictures/Brand X Pictures/Getty Images)

Snap fasteners eliminate the need for buttonholes. These fasteners include an attaching unit and a closure unit and can be decorative on clothing. Snap buttons are usually placed on blouses, blue jeans, dress trousers or purses to fasten and secure the clothing item or purse. However, if you have a loose snap button due to loose threads on your clothing, purse or wallet, you can sew it back to the fabric in no time.

Instructions

  1. 1

Remove the loose thread around the top and bottom snap buttons. Use a pencil to mark the original positions where the top and bottom snap button was located, and then align the snap button in its place.

  2. 2

Double thread the needle and tie a knot at the end. Push a pin through the fabric where you created a mark for the top snap button. Drop the top snap bottom down into the pin. The top snap button has a hole in the middle of the button.

  3. 3

Work the needle from the outside in to sew the thread between the holes and around the top snap button. Push the needle into a small amount of fabric and then go through the hole on the snap button. Sew two stitches for each hole and progress around the button until you have completed the stitches.

  4. 4

Remove the pin to continue around the snap button. Tie a knot near the button and stick your needle underneath the snap to hide the knot. Cut the thread. Repeat the process for the bottom snap button.
