Facebook provides a widely used chat feature that allows members to chat with any friends and groups connected to their profiles. Originally, Facebook did not save any chat message exchanges for more than a few days. Although group chat messages still are not archived, all of your chat messages with friends are archived indefinitely in individual threads, along with private message exchanges. You can recover these chat logs any time you are logged in to Facebook, even if they have disappeared from the smaller chat windows.

  1. 1

Log in to your Facebook profile.

  2. 2

Click the speech bubble button in the top-left corner of the screen. Click "See All Messages" in the drop-down menu that appears. If you are using a mobile phone, you may need to tap or click "Inbox" to access the Messages menu.

  3. 3

Browse the Messages menu for the chat log you are seeking. By default, the messages are organised starting with the most recent messages sent and received, with the archives designated by individual friends. If you are using a computer, you can type in the search bar in the upper-right corner of the window to search the messages for a specific name or phrase.

  4. 4

Click the individual message thread. Scroll up to see all of your chat and private message exchanges.

Tips and warnings

  • Deleted messages cannot be recovered. These messages are not stored elsewhere, unless you have utilised Facebook's feature that allows you to download your information.
