Johnny Depp has appeared in a number of Tim Burton films including "Edward Scissorhands," "Sleepy Hollow," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Alice In Wonderland." His character in "Alice In Wonderland" was the Mad Hatter, who is clearly recognisable by his wacky style and white face make-up. At first, replicating the costume might seem daunting. However, it is quite simple to rejuvenate some old clothes with spray paint and dye. Doing this will give you an individual and eccentric look, just like Depp in "Alice In Wonderland."

Instructions

  1. 1

Spray the wig with orange spray paint, and leave it to dry. Obtain a curly wig, somewhat like a clown's wig so that it has fuzzy, curly hair like the Mad Hatter. You can always cut it to shape if it is too big or long, but it is important that it is curly.

  2. 2

Dye the old blazer with green fabric dye. Use a blazer you no longer need, because it will not be practical to wear it again after it has been jazzed up in the Mad Hatter style. Go to a thrift store or flea market if you are unable to find an old one in your closet. Once you've dyed the jacket, allow it to dry.

  3. 3

Graffiti a random pattern onto the blazer with purple spray paint. Add big swirls, stripes or dots to create an abstract look. It does not have to exactly replicate the original jacket Depp wore, but just give the impression of imagination and randomness like the Mad Hatter.

  4. 4

Create the Mad Hatter's hat. This is a tall top hat you can make using cardboard. First, paint the cardboard black. Then, cut a length long enough to go around your head, and at least 15 inches tall. Wrap it around your head. Place a length of sticky tape along the edge where the two sides join.

  5. 5

Cut a large "O"-shaped disc out of black card stock to create the brim of the hat. First cut a circle with a diameter of approximately 15 inches. Then remove the circle of cardboard from within this shape. It needs to have the same diameters as the width of the tall section you created during Step 4. Stick it around the base of this section with more tape.

  6. 6

Wrap a brightly coloured piece of fabric around the hat, so that it rest on top of the brim. Use bright orange just like Johnny Depp. However, use any colour material you have available to keep costs to a minimum.

  7. 7

Put on the white T-shirt, black trousers and blazer. Attach the wig to your head, by using hair clips to secure it to your hair. Carefully put on the Mad Hatter's tall hat.

  8. 8

Paint your face like the Mad Hatter. Look at a picture of Johnny Depp in this role for inspiration. The face has a base coat of white, with bright pink lips and pink highlight s on the cheekbones. The eye make-up consists of layers of pink and orange paint.

  9. 9

Complete the look by wrapping a colourful scarf around your neck. Johnny Depp is pictured with a variety of different scarfs, so it does not have to be identical to any of those; simply pick a pattern that compliments the orange and pink tones of the outfit.
