I Can't See Subtitles on a Sony TV

Updated April 17, 2017

Viewing closed-caption subtitles on a television set can enhance your viewing experience if you suffer from hearing loss. These subtitles transcribe the dialogue spoken on television shows and display the words in text format at the bottom of the screen. If you can't see the closed-caption subtitles on your Sony television set, you will need to activate this option from the receiver's "Settings" menu.

Switch on your Sony television set.

Press the "Menu" button on the Sony TV set's remote control unit. This is called the "Gate" button on some models.

Press the up- and down-arrow buttons on the remote control handset to scroll down to the "Settings" menu (designated by the suitcase icon). Click the plus-sign button to select this option.

Scroll to the "Caption Vision" option in the "Settings" menu. Click the plus-sign button to select "Caption Vision."

Press the up- and down-arrow buttons on the remote control unit to select and highlight the "On" position. Click the plus-sign button to select this option. This activates closed-caption subtitles on the Sony TV set.

Press the "Menu" or "Gate" button again to exit the "Settings" menu.

Tip

In Step 5, select the "Program" option to enter the advanced closed-caption settings menu. From here you can specify the font style, size, colour and opacity of the subtitles.
