Vocaloid is a human voice emulator, or "singing synthesizer," made by Japan's Yamaha Corporation. Because it is primarily made for the Japanese market, instructions on how to activate, register and use the software can be difficult to locate in English. Most instructions for using the software remain in Japanese because of Vocaloid's relative lack of popularity in the English-speaking world. The following instructions for activating the Vocaloid editor are for Windows-based systems only.

- Vocaloid license information
Click on "Start" and navigate to the Vocaloid folder. There will be a program called "Activate." Start this program now. A dialogue box will appear. Click "Yes." The online activation process will begin.
Select the "This PC has Internet connection" option and then click "Next." A new dialogue will appear in which you must select one of your Internet-related hardware devices. The MAC address of that device will be used to generate your activation code.
Select any of the hardware options provided. It is a good idea to choose one that is permanent to your computer system, rather than an external router or modem which is more likely to be replaced later. Every time you start Vocaloid, it will check for the device you select and use it to verify your activation status. If that device is removed, Vocaloid will have to be reactivated.
Enter the serial number that came with your Vocaloid package in the fields marked "Input serial code." This is required so that Vocaloid can verify that you have a legal copy of the software.
Click "Next" once the serial is entered. A new dialogue will appear listing the different voices you have purchased. Verify that the voice(s) you have purchased are in the list, and click "OK." A pop-up box will appear confirming that activation was successful. You can now use the software without restriction.
Start the program called "Activate" as described in the first step of the "Online Activation" section. When the "Activation Method" window appears, select "This PC has no Internet connection" and click "Next."
Select one of the devices listed in the window that appears. Your Vocaloid activation will be "tied" to this devices MAC address, so choose a device that is a permanent part of your system.
Enter the serial code that came with your Vocaloid package in the boxes under "Input your serial code." Once entered, the button labelled "Generate Auth Info File" will become available. Click the "Generate Auth Info File" button. The activation program will generate a text file called "VOCALOID_ActivationInformation.txt." You will need the information it contains to activate Vocaloid using a computer connected to the Internet -- so copy the file to a thumb drive, SD card or CD-ROM.
Go to a computer that has an Internet connection and open your preferred browser. Navigate to the Vocaloid Offline Activation site (www.vocaloid.com/en/activate/index.html). Copy the "VOCALOID_ActivationInformation.txt" file to the computer with an Internet connection and open the file using a basic text editor such as Notepad (Windows), or TextEdit (Mac OS X).
Copy and paste the contents of the file into the text box on Vocaloid's Offline Activation site and click "Activate." A new text file called "VOCALOID_ActivationKey.txt" will be generated. Save this file to the portable drive or CD-ROM you used for the first text file, and return to the offline computer on which Vocaloid is installed. Click "Import Activation Key" in Vocaloid's activation dialogue and select the activation key file. Activation will proceed automatically. Your copy of Vocaloid is now activated and ready to use.
