The finishing touch on an elegant outfit or a well-chosen textile is the smooth, clean look of a fresh ironing job. Some fabrics, however, seem to have wrinkles and creases no matter how many times you try to press them out. Cottons, denim and heavy linens, in particular, can be a challenge to smooth out. However, you can get the job done with a few extra minutes and a little effort.

  1. 1

Fill a spray bottle with equal amounts of water and vinegar. Spray a small amount on an inconspicuous area of the fabric to test for colour damage.

  2. 2

Spray the stubborn wrinkles with the vinegar solution, and roll the fabric up. Wrap it in a cloth for five to 10 minutes to allow the solution to distribute across the fabric and permeate it.

  3. 3

Unroll the fabric, and lay it on the ironing board upside down, or inside out if it is a garment with a front and a back. Iron the reverse side of the fabric on the appropriate heat setting.

  4. 4

Turn the fabric over, and iron the front side.

Tips and warnings

  • If you are only removing one or two wrinkles, do not roll and wrap the fabric. Simply spray the wrinkles and iron them immediately.
  • If the fabric is delicate, place a dishtowel over it and iron it through the towel.
  • Make sure the fabric is clean before you iron it. Ironing a dirty fabric can set dirt and stains and make them much harder to remove.
