Homemade tapestries are a welcome addition in many home decor soft furnishing styles. The rich and varied colours of tapestry wools available from both Anchor and DMC companies makes it possible to complete both modern, contemporary designs as well as tapestry designs that hark back to bygone eras. Home tapestry ideas range from decorative wall hangings to seat covers or cushions, as well as practical household items such as tea cosies. Ready-made kits, which contain all the necessary materials to complete a tapestry, are readily available to buy in crafts stores or sewing outlets, and it is also possible to design your own tapestries. Anchor and DMC produce tapestry wools in a similar range of colours, and occasionally it may be necessary to substitute a colour from one company with a colour from another.

  1. 1

Look at the paper band around the skein of tapestry wool, and locate the colour name and the colour number. Both are printed on the band.

  2. 2

Download a conversion chart, such as that found on the Willow Fabrics website (see Resources). Find either the shade number of your Anchor tapestry wool, or locate the closest shade to yours from the pictures shown.

  3. 3

Read across the line to find the closest DMC shade that matches your Anchor shade. If you have lost the paper band from your Anchor tapestry wool, find the closest approximation in colour from the chart.

Tips and warnings

  • If you need to substitute one wool for another in the same tapestry, try to avoid changing the wool until you start a new section in that colour. This will help to disguise any small discrepancies between dye processes or dye shade lots.
  • If all else fails, take a sample of the Anchor wool to the craft or sewing store, and visually match up the Anchor shade to the closest DMC shade you can find.
