Citizen band radios, better known by the colloquial "CB," are designed for short to mid-range broadcasts between users. CB radios are affected by engine motions, cell broadcasts and electrical wires. These cause white noise and static on the CB, reducing the effectiveness of the radio. There are two methods of reducing this unwanted noise: using the squelch function on the radio or installing a noise filter.
Tune your CB to your desired channel. Adjust your volume to your preferred setting. Listen for any static or white noise coming through on the CB.
Turn the squelch dial as you adjust the fine tuning dials for your frequency.
Adjust the squelch until the white noise disappears, then turn the squelch dial back just far enough to receive a small amount of static. A little "squelch" is necessary for proper transmitting and receiving; thus, turn back slightly until you hear the slightest bit of static.
Select a noise filter for your particular make and model of CB radio. Install the unit as designated by the instructions. Most filters go onto the unit via the additional speaker or microphone jacks.
Tune your CB to the desired channel and make sure the noise filter is turned on.
Use the squelch function in conjunction with the noise filter and fine-tune out the static by turning the squelch counterclockwise until the noise is eliminated.
Often, static is caused by using an antenna that is too small. If your CB is a home base station model, try using a larger coaxial antenna to reduce static.
