The Open XML Paper Specification or XPS file format is a specification that allows you to save your documents in a fixed format similar to that of a PDF. However, the XPS format is compatible only with Microsoft software and can be used interchangeably with PDF files. Although you can open it with Microsoft Word, you will need to install a plug-in before you can import the XPS file.

Skill level:

  1. 1
  2. 2

Click the "Download" link, and click "Run." This will add the "Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS" plug-in to your Microsoft Word application.

  3. 3

Click "Start." Type "Microsoft Word" into the search box.

  4. 4

Click the "Microsoft Word" icon to open the program.

  5. 5

Click "File," click "Open" and select the XPS file. You can now import your XPS file into Word with the plug-in installed.
