CrystaLac wood grain filler sounds fancier than it really is. Where most wood fillers use a wood-coloured paste made of glue and sawdust, CrystaLac wood grain filler works more like a clear veneer that fills the wood grain without hiding it. This type of filler is useful in fine furniture building, particularly if you want to protect the wood while showcasing its natural grain. Fortunately, application isn't difficult.

  1. 1

Clean the wood surface completely so that there will be no contaminants in the filler when it dries. Do this with dry compressed air or a lint-free cloth.

  2. 2

Dip the clean rag into the bucket of CrystaLac filler, then apply a heavy coat of it to the wood surface, rubbing to make sure it permeates deeply into the wood grain.

  3. 3

Scrape off the excess surface filler with the plastic scraper's sharp edge. Allow the filler to cure for six to eight hours before sanding the finish prior to final polishing.

Tips and warnings

  • Stain the wood before applying the clear filler to ensure an even finish on the completed project.
  • Use CrystaLac only in a well-ventilated area to minimise inhalation dangers.
