The Microsoft Speech API, also known as the SAPI, is responsible for any type of speech recognition present in Windows 7. SAPI 5.4 is the latest release at the time of publication, and can be found in the local Windows folder. If you cannot find the SAPI 5.4 file, you can locate it by searching for the SAPI file using the Windows search function.

Click the "Start" orb on your computer's taskbar and locate the "Search" text entry at the bottom of the "Start" menu.
Enter in "Speech" into the search text entry and press the "Enter" key on the keyboard. Windows searches the computer for "Microsoft Speech."
Right-click the "Windows Speech Recognition" result at the top of the list and click "Open file location." Windows opens a window and reveals the location of the Speech API.
Tips and warnings
- Alternatively, open the "Windows" folder on the computer's "C" drive and open "Speech." Two folders are inside. Open the "Common" folder and inside is the "sapisvr.exe" file. This is the SAPI 5.4 file.
