How to build a stand for a boat motor

Outboard boat motors use a clamping system to attach the motor to the boat's transom. This significantly eases the process of building a stand that will support the engine's weight so that you can work on the motor without crowding your work area with the entire boat. A proper outboard motor stand will not only securely hold your outboard in place but will also fold conveniently out of the way when not in use.

  • 2-by-6 lumber
  • Saw
  • Drill
  • 1/2-inch drill bit
  • Wood screws
  • 2 bolts measuring 1/2 inch by 4 inches with matching locking nuts and washers

  1. 1

    Cut two pieces of 2-by-6 lumber 4 feet long. Cut two additional pieces 3 feet long. Finally, cut three pieces of lumber 2 feet long. This will provide the basic parts for the motor stand.

    Lay the two 4-foot sections of 2-by-6 board on a level surface so that they are lying on their 2-inch by 4-foot side, 2 feet apart at the top and the bottom.

    Lay one of the 2-foot-long boards across the tops at one end of the two parallel boards. This board will form the front of the frame for the motor stand. Place another 2-foot-long board at the other end of the parallel boards so that its 2-inch by 2-foot side is on the ground. Secure these boards to the parallel boards with wood screws and the drill.

    Lay the two 3-foot boards on the floor as you did the 4-foot boards. These two will form the legs of the support for the stand, and thus must fit within the frame you've already built. To do this, cut the final 2-foot board an additional 2 inches shorter. Lay this piece at the bottom of the pair of 3-foot boards to create a U-shape. Secure the U-shape together using wood screws.

    Fit the U-shape series of boards within the frame. The 2-foot board that is secured to the front of the frame should be at the top. The base of the inner U-shape series of boards should be at the bottom. Make certain that the U-shaped boards of both the frame and the legs are aligned when you look at the frame from the side or the top.

    Drill a hole through both sides of the frame and through the legs to mount the pivot point for the legs. The best place to drill is approximately 30 inches from the floor, and in the middle of the boards at this point. This will allow the legs to swing out from the stand and hold the engine securely in place, while still allowing you to store the stand in a relatively small area.

    Run a washer over the bolts, then slide them through the holes that you just drilled. Place a washer onto the other end of each, and then secure them with a locking nut. Tighten the nut until the nylon is holding the nut in place. The legs will be able to swing out in either direction, but will still hold the motor securely in place.

Tips and warnings

  • Install chains to the base of the legs of the stand to act as limiting straps to prevent accidents when mounting larger outboard engines.
  • Ask an assistant help you remove the motor from the transom of the boat and install it onto the engine stand. This will help you avoid injuries from lifting the heavy engine.
