How to Make a Hawk Mask

Make a hawk mask out of cheap materials to complete a hawk costume. Hawks have a specific colouring that distinguishes them from other birds of prey, such as falcons and eagles, so you will need to be sure that you are using the right colours in the right spots. Use a close-up picture of a hawk's face as a reference to ensure your mask resembles the face of a hawk.

  1. 1

Draw one side of a hooked beak, 5 inches in length, on a piece of poster board. Look at a close-up picture of a hawk's face to copy the correct shape of the beak. Cut out the beak and trace the outline on another piece of poster board. Cut out the second beak.

  2. 2

Tape the two sides of the beak together along the top with masking tape. The two sides should curve down at an angle from the top of the beak. Tape the back part of the beak to a paper plate.

  3. 3

Paint the front half of the beak with black acrylic paint and the back half with yellow. Blend the two colours where they meet. Add an oval on either side of the beak near the back edge for nostrils. Refer to the picture of a hawk to paint the outline of the eyes in the correct shape. Outline the eyes with black paint and colour them in with yellowish-orange paint. Add a black circle in the middle for pupils.

  4. 4

Tear 1/2-inch wide pieces of grey, brown and white tissue paper in round, irregular shapes. Spread white craft glue on the face of the hawk, except where you painted, and begin layering the pieces of tissue paper. This technique imitates the feathers and colouring of the hawk. Let the glue dry for one hour.

  5. 5

Poke a hole near the edges of the plate on both sides with a sharp pencil and run an elastic string between them. Tie the strings around the holes so you can wear the mask.
