You can keep your computer secure from viruses using the avast! antivirus application. If you do obtain a virus from a downloaded file or other file source, then you can use avast! to clean and repair the infected file. The application requires an updated virus definition to detect all virus threats on your system, so be sure to update your virus definitions file before repairing your computer's infection.

Run the avast! antivirus application.
Right-click the avast! orange ball icon that is located in your Windows system tray. Click "Update," then "Engine and virus definitions" to ensure that the most accurate virus scan possible.
Click the "SCAN COMPUTER" button on the left side of the avast! program window.
Click the "Scan Now" button, and click "Start!" to run a system scan.
Click the "Repair" button when a virus is detected. avast! will attempt to remove the virus from the file, and return the file to its normal state.
Tips and warnings
- avast! can not repair all infected files. You will receive an error message if avast! can't complete the repair; in that case you must choose to delete the file or place it in quarantine and reinstall it manually.
